With mountains that rise up from the water's edge, Lake Como is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in Europe. Shaped like the letter "Y", it is a glacial lake covering an area of 146 square kilometers and is over 1,320 feet deep.
The most well-known town is Bellagio. A quaint (expensive) village on the eastern shore of the lake. We stayed in the little town of Lenno on the western shore. We discovered in planning the trip that hotels on the western shore are much less expensive than on the eastern shore.
There are three main transportation services on the lake. The 'motorships' service the western and northern sides of the lake. The 'fast services' follow the same routes as the 'motorships' but use hydrofoils. There are also 'ferries' that run between mid-lake villages and carry cars as well as passengers. There are two ways to travel up the lake from the town of Como. One is the water service. The other is by car or bus. Take the water service. Your nerves will thank you.
