Ideally situated on a hilltop near the border of Tuscany and Umbria is the medieval walled city of Anghiari. Seemingly untouched by time, Anghiari was established in the mid-eleventh century.
After taking the train from Florence to Arezzo, where we rented a car, we headed to this charming little village where the pace of life is slow and the people are incredibly friendly. Our lodging was an apartment owned by a couple of friends from the states. Staying in their apartment made us feel as if we were part of the day to day life of the town.
While there we took a few day trips to such places as
Assisi, Urbino, the Adriatic Sea, La Verna and Citta de Castello. But the joy of Anghiari lies in the exploration of what the walled city has to offer.
City life revolves around the main square, Piazza Baldaccio, with its statue of
Giuseppe Garibaldi. Here one can sit at a little sidewalk cafe and enjoy the comings and goings of the towns people and watching the day to day life of the village unfold.
