Consisting of ten provinces and three territories, Canada's borders extend from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward to the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area. Its common border with the United States to the south and northwest is the longest in the world.
A federation governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state, Canada is also a bilingual nation with both English and French as the official languages. The seat of the national government is in Ottawa in the province of Ontario.
The physical geography of Canada provides a land of many contrasts. Boreal forests prevail throughout the country. The western province of British Columbia is home to a temperate rain forest, while the northern territories are home to Arctic tundra.
