Organ Pipe Cactus, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

Achieving statehood in 1912, Arizona was the 48th and last contiguous state to be admitted to the Union. An interesting date as it was also the 50th anniversary of the territory being recognized by the Confederate States of America. Noted for its desert climate, it also features pine forests and mountain ranges in the northern high country.

Due to the variation in climate, Arizona has both the metropolitan area with the most days over 100 degrees, Phoenix, and the metropolitan area with the most days with a low temperature below freezing, Flagstaff.

O.K. Corral, Tombstone, AZ

Arizona is known as one of the Four Corner States. It borders New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California and touches Colorado. It is also the largest landlocked U.S. state by population. The capital of Arizona is Phoenix which became the capital when the state was admitted to the Union in 1912.

Home of the Grand Canyon, Arizona is also home to numerous other national forests, parks and monuments. In additions more than a quarter of the state is Federal Trust Land which serves as hoe to the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Tribe, the Tohono O'Odhan and Apache people and various Yman tribes such as the Yavapai, Quechan and Hualapai.
